4.3.2.1 audience profiling

From these results you can see that 4.3.2.1's target audience ranges from 15-45+. The main audience range is between 25-34 with 32% wanting to see the film. Males are also more likely to see the film with 56% seeing the film.

We have been looking at these results and decided to make our target audience range similar to this. We are thinking of making our tartget audience between 15 and 24 with males also being targeted rather than females.

Teaser Trailer ratings

We have decided to give our teaser trailer a rating of 15. This is because from our audience profiling research we have found out that the younger audience will be attracted to our genre. We thought that an 18 rating be better but have then changed our mind because we'll missing out on a large part of our target audience. Other films that we have researched such a Fast and furious and also kidulthood are also rated at 15. This will lead to higher box office returns because of the greater audience available to watch the film.

Audience Profiling - Fast and furious

Fast and Furious
release date: 10th April 2009
price: C+
estimated box office: £6,000,000
genre(s): Action
director(s): Chris Morgan
film cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster
certificate: 12A
distributor: Universal Pictures

Here you can see a table that shows the type of audience that went Fast and Furious. Like our film Fast and Furious includes car chases and is of the action genre. 74% of the audience for this film is in the age category between 15-24 years of age. This shows we need to target our film at people in this age category. The gender analysis shows that 74% of the audience for this film was males.
These stats suggest that are teaser trailer should be aimed at young males. We plan to do this by including lots of action, by using fast editing techniques.

Audience profiling

As you can see from the table below the highest percentage of people that go to the cinema in the UK are people in the age 15-24 age category. We therefore have decided to aim our teaser trailer at people in this age category so we have a larger target audience.

We will need to make sure our teaser trailer includes the appropriate style and narrative to attract this particular audience. We will need to make sure our storyline is contemporary and relevant in modern society which I feel ours is. We have chosen teenage actors so that it appeals to a fairly youthful audience. We are going to try and find suitable music to use that is contemporary, again to attract our target audience.

Update on filming

Last week we decided to film part of the teaser trailer. We have filmed the first couple of scenes but we may have to re do some of them to make them more realistic and authentic. We also decided to change the location of the trailer, our first ideas were to film at young street car park which is a gravel car park. We decided to change it because the car park was waterlogged and it was difficult to film on. We moved the location to a train station car park as it is a lot easier to film and in actual fact is it probably better overall. Also we have more actors than we first planned and also more cars. We have gone from three actors to six actors and two cars to three cars. I feel making these changes are going to benefit our teaser trailer and make it better.

Mise en scene - Costume

This is a rough idea of what the actors will be wearing during the teaser trailer. The actors will be wearing gangster clothing because that is the genre that we are hoping to emulate. We are also keeping the car chase within the teaser trailer as it will add more action and will be more interesting for the target audience.

These clothes are stereotypical of what the gangster characters usually wear.

What we have based our actors on

This is Adam Deacon who has featured in various teenage crime films such as Kidulthood, Adulthood and Anuvahood. All these films we researched to find out the characteristics of that genre. We have tried to emulate his clothing within our own trailer. We have done this by making our actors wear typical clothing such as joggers, hoodies and nike trainers for example. All these pieces of clothing will be quite dark because people within that situation want to stay undercover and not draw attention to themselves. He is the perfect actor to base our own actors upon, this is because he is well known within the industry.

Actors

This is Dave Bouchard, he will be playing one of the dealers. He is the one that chases the buyer after he gets away. We have chosen him because he has the look and the figure that is needed to be a dealer.

Actors

This is Jack David, he will be one of our dealers along with Jack Alisiroglu. We have chosen him because they work well together and also have similarities.

Actors

This is dago. He is playing one of the drug dealers in our teaser trailer. You dont see him much in the footage however he still needs to wear suitable clothing so he looks like a realistic drug dealer.

Actors

This is Jack. He will be playing one of the teenage gangsters who. We feel he suits this role as he is turkish and has a north london accent. We feel using him in this role will create authenticity and realism for the target audience.

Actors

This is Dan. He is playing the victim who gets beaten up. We have chosen him for this role because he looks weak and vulnerable. We feel that the audience can realate to him and we feel he has the right crudentials to get an emotional reaction from the audience

Actors

This is Louis. He is playing one of the drivers in our teaser trailer. He is in the film therefore needs to where suitable clothing so that the mise-en-scene looks realistic and professional. We feel he is suitable to play the role of the driver that is being chased because he looks like he can be easily intimidated therefore creating realism for the audience.

Script

We have decided not to do a script for our teaser trailer as there will be no dialogue or voiceovers. Most teaser trailers do have some dialogue however we felt that it was not necessary in ours. We have put our focus into other aspects of sound like diagetic sound and non-diagetic sound.
We want to use a variety of natural diagetic sound like the sound of tyres screeching for example. We feel this will indicate genre and narrative to the audience just as effectively as dialogue would. We also feel that non-diagetic sound (background music) is also an effective way of revealing narrative and genre. We want our teaser trailer to be unique in this way therefore we felt there is no need to produce a script.

Plot

. Dealers wait in the car park for the buyers

. Buyers pull into car park and give a signal

. One of the buyers and two of the dealers get out of the car and walk towards each other

. Buyer hands over the money

. Dealer hands over the drugs

. Dealer throws a punch and knocks the buyer over

. Dealers take the drugs back off him

. Dealers beat up the buyer

. Buyer who was left in the car turns on his engine and races away

. One of the dealers who was in a car chases the buyer

. Montage of scenes such as hand brakes, burn outs and wheel spins

Improved Shot list

Shot 1: This is an establishing shot of the a car entering the car park, the camera also pans around at the same time. We used this shot so that the audience could get an idea of the location, it also gives them an idea of  what type of genre it will be.

Intertitle

Shot 2: The camera then fades and goes into another scene. We used an over the shoulder long shot to show our first glimpse of the actors. The long shot was used because we didn't want to go straight into introducing the characters.

Intertitle

Shot 3: Medium shot of all the actors together, this is first time that the audience see all 3 actors.

Intertitle

Shot 4: Camera then goes back to the previous shot where a fight scene starts.

Shot 4: Over the shoulder close up shot of another actor in the car. This has been used to show the emotions of that character. While this is happening the fight is still going on in the background.

Shot 5: Long shot of the car chase beginning. The camera also pans round when the cars go past.

Shot 6: Long shot the cars coming towards the camera. I think this is a good shot because it feels like the cars are coming straight towards the camera.

Shot 7: Long shot of the coming past. This is a good shot because it show the audience how fast the car going. It builds tension within the trailer.

Intertitle

Shot 8: Medium shot of a car doing a wheel spin. This is the start of a montage so the shots are quite quick to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Shot 9: Medium shot of a cars wheels screeching, this makes the audience feel like someone is following him.

Shot 10: Close up of the radio playing, it is a song that is associated with teenagers.

Shot 11: Long shot of a car speeding in a certain location

Shot 12: Close up of a gear change, this is a good shot because it allows the audience to see what is happening within the car. It is also adds a bit of difference from all the shots being outside the car.

Shot 13: Medium shot of the car coming out of a hand brake turn. These shots are meant to be quick so that it keeps the tension high.

Intertitle

Shot list

Long shot of when when the car pulls into the car park

Over the shoulder shot of buyer getting out of his car

Over the shoulder shot of the dealers walking towards the buyer

Meduim shot of the buyer handing the money over and the dealer giving him the drugs

Medium shot of one of the dealers throwing a punch towards the buyer

Over the shoulder shot of the buyer in the car racing away

Establishing shot of the dealer chasing the the buyer

Panning shot of the cars racing out of the car park

Long of the cars racing down the ramp

Side on still shot of the cars going past

Montage of hand brakes, wheel spins and characters emotions, these will be filmed using close ups to emphasise the scene.

Props

This is another car that we will be using in our film

Here are some pictures of another car we are using in our teaser trailer. We chose this car because it is a failry standard teenagers car. It looks quite sporty and fits in with the teenage gangster genre.

Monday 29 November 2010

Props

This is one of the other cars we will be using in our teaser trailer. This car suits the genre of our teaser trailer as it is sporty and looks quite dodgy.

Props

This one of the cars that we will be using in our film.

This will be one of the background cars for the teaser trailer. It will be used as one of the dealers cars. The reason we chose this car to be in our teaser trailer was because of its colour. We think that black is a typical colour for this situation.

Kidulthood Analysis

Kidulthood has had a major impact on our change in genre decision. It is a film the deals with the issues that revolve around teenage crime. The trailer uses dark lighting mostly to indicate to the audience what the genre of the film. The major thing we have learnt from watching Kidulthood is the costume and the type of actors they have used. For example I feel the actor Adam Deacon is crucial in helping to sell the film.

We will be looking to include things based on from watching the trailer:

- The use of costume
- Dark lighting
- Fast paced editing
- Type of music
- Camera angles and composition
- Settings and location ideas

This is a trailer and we are producing a teaser trailer so we are going to try and use even faster editing and include more intertitles. We have also decided not to use dialogue unlike this trailer as we want the audience to focus on our diagetic and non-diagetic sound.

Attack the block analysis

Genre - Black cinema with humour linked in as well. It is a hybrid genre which is their USP to appeal to their audience.

Narrative - There is no start and ending so the narrative is slightly unclear, this keeps the audience guessing throughout and wanting to find out more.

USP - With the narrative being unclear it keeps the audience guessing which that could be seen as their USP.

Target audience - It is targeted at teenagers as they are able to find a link between the actors and themselves. They can relate to the humour and dialogue as they are used to it in modern day life.

Music - There is a quiet backing track throughout, dialogue is used throughout. Non dialogue is also being used.

Shot types - Mid shots and close ups are used to show the characters emotions. Over the shoulder shots have been used during conversation. High angle and low angle shot are used to show who has more power during different scenes.

Pace - Fast to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, builds the tension within the scenes.

Special effects - they have used it special effects for the creatures that are attacking the block

Dialogue - it is used throughout, phrases such as "lets get tooled up blud" and "their quite sweet aren't they" shows that their is humour within the film.

Credits and intertitles - They have put the obvious intertitles such as the film name and when it is being released. Other things like the production company, other films the producer has made, the location of the film and who the enemys are.

Fast Five Trailer

Title - Fast Five
Actors - Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and others
Release Date - 29th April 2011
Length - 2.01 minutes

This is a good trailer that we are going to get ideas from. This is because it has the genre as us and also uses the same ideas as we are hoping to. It has fast paced scenes which is what we are going to try and emulate. There are blackout pictures with inter titles which is also what we want to do. They have used montage scenes throughout which i think gives on a good effect. We will try and see if we can use some of their ideas and use them in our teaser trailer.

The trailer has not used much music but instead decided to use special sound effects such as gun shots, engines and other things. They have not used a voice over, they have used dialogue from the trailer and put that in when appropriate. I think this has a good effect because it give the trailer good continuity. The inter titles have been used at the beginning and at the end, the title of the film is shown at the end.

The target audience for this film will be mainly male as it is to do with cars, fighting and mainly action throughout. There is also a male gaze effect within the trailer which will attract males. This is the scene where a female in a bikini is walking by the beach, this will obviously attract males rather than females.

4.3.2.1 teaser trailer

Genre - Action is suggested by the showing of weapons. Urban drama is connotated through the use of actors such as Adam Deacon and the director Noel Clarke who has made previous films such as Kiduthood.

Narrative - Not that clear as it just tries to show off the actors towards the audience. It also show the audience who the dirctor of the film is, this gives them a good idea of what the film will be about.

USP - The narrative is unclear which makes the audience wanting ro find out more. This could be one of their viral marketing campaign.

Target Audience - young adults and teenagers. English and American, trying to target Americans through the use of American actors. The creators attract the target audience with the fast pace of the trailer, also using well known characters in the niche genre which will attract the viewers.

Music - ticking clock to represent countdown. Drums kick in matching the pace of the trailer.

Shot types / Camera Angles - Mid shots and close ups have been used in order to show emotion of the characters e.g anger fear or shock in the case of this trailer. Uses a lot of camera panning, and then the  occasional use of hand-held camera, in order to create realism.

Pace - Fast paced and is continuous throughout
Special Effects - none as the film is more to do with realism.

Dialogue - it is used through parts of the film. phrases such as " you are about to die" indicates that the film is to do with action and violence. Humour is also used in sections of the film to make it a bit more light hearted. The phrase "is that blood?" "Dont get it on the seats" shows this.

Credits and intertitles - counts down from 30 - 1 seconds. "Noel Clarke presents" this connotates a similar film to the popular kidulthood/adulthood. Coming soon which is a standard titlein many teaser trailers.

Genre change

We have decided to carry on with the idea of the action genre however we are now mixing it with the teenage gangster genre to create a hybrid genre. We have decided to do this because we are looking to make our teaser trailer more postmodern and most importantly more appealing to an audience. We feel that teenage crime is a very contemporary issue, therefore making a film that deals with some of he issues related with it will be attractive to a younger audience as they can relate to it. We feel creating an hybrid genre will also create a larger target audience, therefore giving the film more potential to be successful.

Actors in action films and their characteristics compared to our own actors

Bruce Willis is a well known actor within the film industry. He is an expert within the action section. He's been in many films such as Die Hard, 16 blocks, Hostage and many more.

He is often left on his own to complete a mission and therefore save day. He is involved in shooting , fighting and car chase scenes. He has the perfect characteristics to play the role intended.

In our teaser trailer we want to emulate bruce willis in his stereotypical role in the film. This will be difficult as our actor will not be as experienced and have the same qualities as Bruce Willis. We will want to try and make it as realistic as possible.

Wednesday 24 November 2010

Music

Our Teaser Trailer will have fast paced music because the editing within the film will be quick as it is a car chase. The music will probably start off slow and then pick up speed as the Teaser trailer goes on. The start will be quite tense as it setting the scene. Once a big thing happens then  it will all start. I think the faced paced music will look really good with fast paced editing.
The website that we will be using to search types of music for the Teaser trailer will be http://www.fruitloops.com/. This is a good website as it provides me with all the UN copy written music which is what we are allowed to use.

Shot composition practise

Today we practised shot composition by creating different scenes with only the props around us.

The scenes were:

. Romantic Date in a cafe
. Waiting at the Train Station
. Busy Office
. Dentist Waiting room

This was all quite difficult as we were filming the scenes while we were at school. The Office and Dentist were easier to do compared to the other ones as we had some of the props that you would find in an office or dentist. The props used for the dentist waiting room were tables, chairs, magazines, flowers and a receptionist. For the Office we filmed the school office so it was quite easy as it had all main props.

The Train Station and romantic date were slightly more difficult. With the Train Station we decided to film by a metal fence with a lamp post in the background. This worked well as with train stations there aer usually lamp post and fencing to divide the platform and the car park. We also had one of the actors drop his train ticket which made it obvious to the audience where we were filming. The romantic date was also quite hard as we didn't have any props available for it. We decided to film it on a bench with the two actors holding hands. We had the camera zoom in on them holding hand to emphasize that it is romantic. We had plants and flowers in the background as well which made it more romantic.

Overall i think that the task went well as we were able to see that props whether they are in the background or part of the scene always make a difference when trying to set the scene. We were able to complete every task successfully with them all looking authentic and realistic. This will help us when we start to film our teaser trailer as we have seen how important the props and the lay out of the scene is.

Location, Timing and Weather for our Teaser Trailer

We have been thinking that the location of our teaser trailer is most probably going to be done around our area. This is because it will be easy to shoot and there are also some good locations to do it. Some of the filming will be done down side streets and some will be on main roads. Most will be side streets though. The filming is most likely to take place at night as that is a typical time for a car chase/action to commence. With it being dark the enemy can stay undercover so that his presence is not noticed. We don't really mind what the weather is, if it is wet then it will be easier to do some of the stunts like hand brake turns. I think overall it would be better if it is dry as it will be safer.

Characteristics of Hollywood Action Films

They’re fast, they’re exciting, and they keep us on the edge of our seats (or at least they’re supposed to). The plots move quickly from one dramatic event to the next and just when it seems like all problems are solved, something else happens and everything spins out of control once more. It’s up to an unwilling hero to come in and save the day.
Action films have dominated at the box office since the genre came into its own in the 1970s. They command some of the biggest budgets in Hollywood films and usually feature the world’s biggest movie stars.
Often not adored by critics, action films have been popular with audiences since the genre emerged in the 1970s (helped in part by the success of the James Bond franchise). While action heroes have existed in films since the 1920s (think Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn), the genre itself didn’t become popular until directors such as John Carpenter and George Miller began making action-centered films.

Action films are known for having a few characteristics that run throughout the genre. They are always fast-paced, have a (usually male) hero-centered narrative, a beautiful love interest who will require saving, and a multitude of guns, explosions, chases, and dangerous stunts. Character development usually takes a backseat, but with so much excitement on-screen, viewers most likely won’t care.

There are many sub-genres within the larger action genre which include:

.Spy film

.Cop film

.Crime film

.Buddy film

.Superhero film

.Revenge film

.Apocalypse film

In all of these it’s up to the hero to save the day. He (or on rare occasion, she) is good, the villains are bad, and there’s nothing in between.
Action films are high-energy, big-budget, escapist entertainment. While they are not as popular as they were during the 1980s, they still dominate the box office, especially during the summer blockbuster season. Whether it’s man versus a corrupt system (a frequent theme in the 1980s), stories about the end of the world (popular at the turn of the century), or comic book heroes brought to life (the early 21st-century), it seems as though action movies will be with us for a long time to come.

By Lauren Flanagan

Intial ideas for plots

1. Civilian walks out of house
2. Gets in his car
3. Pulls out of his drive and continues down his road
4. Enemy watches from another car close by
5. Slowly follows without trying to be noticed
6. Civilian realises that he is being followed
7. He speeds up a bit but cannot get away
8. Enemy pulls up along side him at traffic lights
9. Both race away causing havoc

Other scenes that will be included can be hand brake turns and wheel spins.

Shot types for our film

We have been thinking about different shots to use in our film. We need to make sure we use the right shots for the right scene so that we can interact with the audience. We have been researching other action films and they have all used the typical shots that you would see in an action film, these are shots like close ups, medium shots, point of view, birds eye view and establishing shots. As our film is an Action we will need to use lots of close ups of particular props such as the gear sticks and car tyres. We will use medium shots to show a wider shot of what will be happening within the scene. We will use over the shoulder shots to show when the character is having a convasation and will also use a point of view shot to show what the character is facing or can see. Canted angles may also be used within the film to make the audience feel un easy and un sure of what will happen. For the fast paces scene we will probably be using close ups and medium shots. Establishing shot will be used to set the scene and Canted angles will be used to put the audience in a tense situation and thinking whats going to happen.

Action Mood Board

Above is a mood board that includes different images that all relate the Action, the genre we are doing. These pictures will help us with shot types and different scene as they have given us ideas from other films. Most of the pictures are quite simple colours except for when there is explosions. Most of the shots used in the pictures are either long shots which gives the audience an idea of the location. Medium shots have also been used for when the camera is focusing on the character rather than the action. With these shots the audience will immediately be able to tell the genre of the film which is what we ant to do.

Cowboys vs Aliens Teaser Trailer

Title - Cowboys & Aliens
Director - Jon Favreau
Producers - Brian Grazer and Ron Howard
Executive Producer - Steven Spielberg
Actors - Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford

The Genre of the film is Science Fiction. We can tell it is a Sci Fi because there are Aliens. The narrative of the film is basically the Cowboys defending themselves against the Aliens. They have come under attack from the aliens and it had something to do with Daniel Craig as he has some sort of Alien invention attached to his arm. The unique selling point of the film is that it is a hybrid genre. It is connecting  two completely different worlds, the Western and Aliens. The other selling point is that it has some very well known actor starring within the film such as Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. The target audience is probably middle aged men and possible late teenagers. It will also target audiences that have enjoyed Indiana Jones films and also James Bond films.

Music that they have used in the trailer is quite tense, this builds up the suspense for when the Aliens attack. It makes the audience feel that something is approaching and about to happen. They have decided to include shot types that show the characters emotion. Close ups and medium shot have been used frequently. A perfect example is when the camera zooms onto a close of the girl when the Aliens attack. They have also used high angles and low angles to show who has authority within the scene. The pace of the Trailer starts off quite slow and has parts speed up. Its quite jumpy so for example it speeds up and then goes back to an original pace. When the Aliens attack it scene speed up because the action is becoming more tense.

Dialogue has been used in the trailer. They have used snippets from the film that works well within the trailer even it is not the same scene. The dialogue is mainly from the main actors such as Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. They have used a lot of special effects because it is a Sci Fi, they need to do this so that it makes it authentic for the audience. CGI has also been used. Credits were shown through the trailer, they were shown once a scene had finished. The main title came up at the end of the trailer, this is so that it is the last thing that the audience remember, the title, the most important bit.

Die Hard Teaser Trailer

Die hard is a well known action film within the film industry. They have used typical techniques to put across their genre to the audience that they have chosen. They have used techniques like fast paced editing to keep the audience interested and wanting to see more. This makes the film look like something is always happening and that it never gets boring. They have also used camera shots like close ups and extreme close ups so that you can see the characters emotions. With close ups it also makes the film look like it is going a lot quicker than it actually is. Some of the shots they have done you can see that they might not actually be moving e.g. when the lorry driver turns the wheel he could just be at a standstill.

The teaser trailer is 1.41 long which is longer than most teaser trailers. The usual teaser trailer is about 1 minute long.

Friday 22 October 2010

First ideas plot

Car awaits in a parking space (enemy)
He looks in his mirror and See's the civilian drive past
He follows him for a bit trying to stay undercover
Front car notices that he is being followed and decides to accelerate
The car chase begins
Followed up with a montage of quick editing cuts during the chase scene
Eventually the car being chased gets away

Update on final task

Today we have been thinking of the types of scenes that we would like in our teaser trailer. We would like to film some close ups on wheel spins and fast gear changing. We need an establishing shot to set the location of the teaser trailer. We will also try and film some hand brake turns. Point of view shots of the drivers to show what is in front of them. Shots of the actors will also be needed so that the audience know who is starring in the film.

Time Management

So far me and my other group member have decided on the genre and who is going to star in it. The genre is action and it will be a Car Chase.

Death Race 2 Teaser Trailer

This trailer is a sequel from Death Race so the audience already know what the film is about and the main characteristics. The Trailer starts off with showing the production company which is Universal. This typical of most trailer as the production use it for publicity. The Trailer is approximately 1.03 long which is about average for teaser trailers.

From the very beginning it starts off with a voice over which gives the audience a sense of what its about, the location and who's in it. They have used dialogue from parts of the film to give an idea of what its about for example "every car will hold as many guns and ammunition as it can", this shows that the film is brutal and action packed. Another example is when they say "if the prisoner wins five races he wins his freedom", this also tells the audience the basic plot of the film. The voice over also states some some of the films that the film maker has already made, this will allow the audience to recognise some of the films which they may have seen and enjoyed. The voice over also tells the audience information such as the film name and when it is being released. They have also used backing track to make it more exciting for the audience.

They have edited the clips together quickly rather than just have one scene which is what "super 8" did. This is more common with action films as it gets the audience intrigued and it allows them to see different parts of the film. The more parts of the film that are shown shows the audience that there is a lot of  action involved which is what they want. The clips include all the main actors which allow the audience to see who is starring in it. They have used a variety of shots during the teaser trailer so that it appeals to the audience. Using lots of different shots makes it more interesting as well.

James Bond Car Chase

I have been looking at other Car Chase film and James Bond Quantum of Solice is one of them. This is a very good example of a Car Chase, its is very fast editing which keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. It switches from shot to shot to show every angle of the Car Chase, this give a good view to the audience and it some them the setting and the location. They have amplified the sound of the car wheels skidding, engines and crashes. There are a lot of incidents that happen throughout the car chase such as the lorry crashing against the wall and other cars crashing. It is very well edited together and is very realistic. They do not use a backing track because they want to keep it very realistic, using ampified sounds of the cars engines gives it a better veiwing for the audience.

They have used camera shots such as close ups, medium shot, long shots and point of veiw shots. They have used close ups so that the audience get an idea of the characters facial expressions. Medium shots were used to show things like the quick gear changes and quick steering. Long shots are used to show the crashes, this gives the audience a full shot and experience of the crash. The point of view shot is used to the characters point of view of what is happening in front of them, this gives the audience an experience of what the characters are having to face.

Genre

We have thought about different genres and have decided that we will do a Car Chase. This will be exciting and different as it is not usually done. Here is a spider diagram that shows the typical characteristics of a Car Chase.

These are the characteristics that are usually found within action films. We will try to employ one of the main stereotypes which is the good vs bad guy. Also quick shots from various angles is key for an action film, this is because the audience needs to kept on the edge of their seat. Sound is also very important within action films as it creates tension within scenes, this makes the audience gripped to the screen and not wanting to leave.

Genre Ideas

These are some of the genres that we have looked into for when we complete our final teaser trailer. It has given us an idea of what we want to do. There are a variety of genres and a variety of films within each section.

Wednesday 13 October 2010

Preliminary Task

The film is basically just showing the audience the location of the film and what is happening during that particular scene. As you can see from our preliminary task it it not very good quality. I'm not sure why the film has ended up in this quality, it might be because we saved it into the wrong document and therefore it not looking as it should. This is because our time management skills were not very good for this task and we were both not used to using the Adobe Premier technology.

We used the backing music because it was a jolly tune which will make it a bit more interesting for the audience. We didn't use any dialogue during the teaser trailer because we didn't feel that the trailer needed any dialogue. We used writing such as the title of the film and when it is being released. The film is roughly the same time length as a typical teaser trailer. The film also didn't contain many different shot types which is because the film is just an overview of the school.

In the main film there will be a lot of changes for example we will improve the quality of the film and use different shot types to keep the audience interacted and interested. We will also have a lot more time to produce this film which means we can do enough research on what a typical teaser trailer looks like and then emulate it. We will also be a lot more focused on the task to create a good teaser trailer.

Preliminary Task

Today we finished off our Preliminary task. The film is not the best quality because we did not have much time to complete due to our lack of time management. You'll be able to see from the final copy that it is quite rushed.

The problems that we had with the task was that both me and my other group member had not used the Adobe Premier equipment. This is because last year one of our other team members knew what they were doing and that wasn't really our role in the group. It it took a while for us to get to grips with the technology but now we feel that for our main task we can make a better film.

With the film we tried different applications such as speeding up the time, this made the scenes quicker which will make the audience intrigued to whats going to happen. We have added back sounds to the film to try and make it more interesting for the audience as otherwise it could be boring. With sound it adds another element of technology to the film and makes it more realistic.

Genre ideas

We have been thinking of different type of genres that we could do for our main task. So far we have come up with a couple of ideas which are horror, action and comedy.

As a group we want to try and do an action film which will include a car chase. The only problem with it is that it will be difficult to film and then edit together and keep the continuity. We feel that it would be the most interesting and exciting genre to try out. We would use our mates cars as it would be easier.

Types of films that have used car chases are: The fast and the furious, Dukes of Hazard, James Bond, Eagle Eye and Stormbreaker. We have looked at these films and tried to see how the produce an authentic car chase that looks real and keeps the audience interested and intrigued.

We have experience in the horror genre because we have already made a horror film in year 12 which went well and everyone we spoke to seem to enjoy it. But as a group we feel that we want to try something different and that's why our preferred option is to do the Action/Car chase.

The Expendables teaser trailer

Genre - Action
USP - action with some famous actors involved
Target Audience - Late teens to the older generation
Shot types - medium shots and close ups to the the facial expressions of the actors.
Director - Slyvestre Stallone
Produced by - Guymond Casady

The expendables is an action film that stars some very well known actors such as Jason Statham, Jet Li, Micky Rourke, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Slyvestre Stallone.

The trailer is about 40 seconds long which is shorter than most teaser trailers. The average is around 60 seconds. The trailer is quick paced throughout which keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. The reason why they dp this is so that they get the audience interested and wanting to find out more.

The trailer contains background music throughout. The sound track is by Thin Lizzy- Boys are back in town. The track is from the 70's which states that there are some older actors involved and also are targeting an older audience than it usually would. The trailer contains a voice over that is used through parts of the clip. The voice over tells the audience what the basic plot of the film is. It also tells the audience the name of the film and when it is also being released in the cinemas. This is key information that the audience need to know. They also use diologue in parts of the trailer as well.

They show clips of each character, this shows the audience what they are like and how they act. It gives the audience an idea of what to expect.

Super 8 teaser trailer review

Producer - Steven Spielberg
Director - J.j Abrams
release date - Summer

The Super 8 teaser trailer does not give to much away. This keeps the audience waiting to find what happens. During the trailer they tell you the producer, director, name of the film and the release date. They tell you the basic details of whats happening for example, the location, the genre and the outline of the film.

The trailer is dark which makes it mysterious for the audience. It jumps between the plot of the film and the information e.g. producer and director. They keep the creature hidden so that it doesn't give anything away.
The editing is fast past which keeps the audience attracted and wanting more.

The trailer is about 1.30 long which is quite long as most teaser trailers are about 1 minute. With the trailer being slightly longer than most it gives the audience an opportunity to find out what the film is exactly about, who is starring in it and when it is being released. The trailer seems to be just one scene which is unusual as a large majority of trailers show lots of different scenes so that the audience get an idea of what happens. In this it looks like they only show one scene.

The trailer does not include any background music which is common in horror films as they try to spook the audience out. The have amplified sounds of the train warning lights, car skidding, train crash and when the thing tries to get out of the carriage. They have decided to do this because it makes the clip more emphatic and it looks like a bigger catastrophe.

They decide not to tell the audience who is starring in it as then the audience will have to research and then they will find other parts of information that relates to the film. This helps them to promote the film and it gets the audience involved.
